New PM Morrison tours Australia's drought-stricken Outback

Newly appointed Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison unveiled his new cabinet over the weekend after winning the Liberal Party leadership on Friday in a party room spill which saw Malcolm Turnbull step aside.

"He was someone who above all else wanted to change policy, not change leader, and I am confident given the remarks of new Prime Minister Scott Morrison, given the ministerial appointments he's made, there will be better policy, a united party and a sharper difference with our opponents", he said.

"I want to move on from the events of last week", said Ms Bishop at her final media appearance as Foreign Minister.

The 62-year-old stood in the three-way contest to become Liberal Party leader and prime minister after the ousting of Turnbull, but was knocked-out in the first round, gaining just 11 of 85 lawmakers' votes.

"I thank Julie for her support, guidance, and superb leadership".

Morrison went on to defeat Dutton by a vote of 45-40.

"I didn't always see eye to eye with Julie Bishop but no one, no one could dispute that she was a person who presented the case for Australia with a bit of flair", he told reporters.

His departure will trigger a by-election and place Mr Morrison's parliamentary majority at risk.

Meanwhile, Australia's new prime minister began his first full day Saturday with a phone call to Donald Trump as he set about restoring faith in his "battered and bruised" government after a tumultuous week. "The circumstances have appalled most Australians but again, I won't labour the point", he told a gathering in his electorate on Monday night, Fairfax reported.

"Mr Taylor's extensive commercial understanding will be critical in finding solutions to the competing arms of containing prices, maintaining reliable supply and attracting new investment to the energy sector", Roberts said.

'We've communicated. He was on his way to Quilpie [a drought-affected Queensland town], and we'll be talking in the days ahead, ' he said.

It was previously announced that Josh Frydenberg, who won the role of deputy leader on Friday, would replace Morrison as Treasurer.

"The Australian people look at this government and say a mini-budget won't fix it, an election will", Mr Bowen said.
