North Korea: US 'Double-Dealing' After Pompeo Trip Canceled

The statement by the Foreign Ministry in Seoul on Saturday came hours after President Donald Trump directed Pompeo to delay his trip because of what he saw as a lack of progress on nuclear disarmament talks with the North.

President Trump called off Pompeo's visit Friday, just days before the secretary was due to arrive in Pyongyang, citing insufficient progress in the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

"Because of our much tougher trading stance with China, I do not believe they are helping with the process of denuclearization as they once were", despite United Nations sanctions against the nuclear-armed regime, Trump said.

JONATHAN ERNST/REUTERS/NewscomPresident Donald Trump's trade war has disrupted global supply chains, raised prices for the raw materials used by American manufacturers, caused some businesses to shut down or to lay off workers, and forced others to come to Washington to beg for their survival. They will attempt to prod negotiations that have halted over disagreements about the pace of denuclearization, a declaration of peace, and what concessions the USA may be prepared to offer to show good faith.

Beijing hit back at Trump's "capricious" accusations and said it had lodged an official diplomatic complaint over the comments. "We are seriously concerned about this", Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Lu Kang said in a statement posted on the ministry's website.

"We are seriously concerned and have made solemn representations, (diplomatic protest) to the U.S. side", Lu said.

Beijing supports "advancing the process of a political settlement" following the Trump-Kim meeting in Singapore, the statement said.

Pompeo Urges Taliban to Honor Cease-Fire: `It's Time for Peace'
The Taliban, which controls or contests half of Afghanistan, wants direct talks with the US because it views Ghani's government as illegitimate.

The Rodong Sinmun commentary lambasted the US, alleging that it was conducting "extremely provocative and dangerous" military drills that threatened "to mar the hard-won atmosphere of the peace on the Korean peninsula", adding that such moves could bring to a halt the ongoing negotiations over the North's nuclear program "and prevent the implementation" of the joint statement signed by Trump and Kim in Singapore.

The surprise announcement appeared to mark a concession by the president to domestic and worldwide concerns that his prior claims of world-altering progress on the peninsula had been strikingly premature. But the meeting produced no binding agreement on how a nuclear-free peninsula would occur.

This sort of comment reflects considerable mistrust in North Korea, which grows substantially when the USA starts backing away from diplomatic channels.

Shin Beom-chul, senior fellow at Asan Institute for Policy Studies in Seoul, said such sanctions busting, together with South Korea's push to expand ties with the North, could exacerbate friction with the United States on how to handle North Korea. However, experts say they are hard to verify without outside inspection. And they have been skeptical about an end-of-war declaration in the absence of any progress on the nuclear matter.

After his summit with the North Korean leader in June, Mr Trump said the country was no longer a nuclear threat. In fact, this isn't the first time Trump has scrapped a scheduled meeting with Pyongyang; he called off his Singapore summit with Kim in May, before hastily rearranging it. "It seems Japan is indifferent to the world's advice to keep up its policy with the changed situation and the changed trend", said one commentary released by the KCNA news agency earlier this month.
