Thomas Cook evacuates 300 from Egyptian hotel after couple's deaths

Holidaymakers were offered alternative hotels "as a precautionary measure" following the deaths of John and Susan Cooper, the tour operator said in a statement. His office was waiting for a forensic analysis of samples from their bodies, he said.

It said the hotel was last audited late last month and received an overall score of 96%.

There was "no reason" to suspect the deaths were of a "criminal nature", the officials said.

The findings were made public shortly after daughter Kelly Ormerod revealed they had been "in flawless health" just hours before they died.

John, 69, died in the five-star hotel in front of his horrified daughter Kelly Ormerod before 64-year-old Susan was rushed to hospital where she later passed away.

The circumstances of the deaths remain unclear, the company said, adding that it has sent 24 staff to support around 300 customers in the hotel. "We want to stay but we have to leave without ANY logical reasonable explanation", said one Twitter user, @SalieVerdeye, who claims to be at Steigenberger Aqua Magic.

She explained that they had all enjoyed a meal together before the Coopers went to bed at around 1.30am. Ormerod said her 63-year-old mother, a Thomas Cook employee, was taken to hospital but later died.

He said that Mr Cooper had complained of low blood pressure and was treated by the hotel's on-site doctor on the day he died.

It had given guests the choice of relocating to another hotel in Hurghada or returning home and nearly all had made a decision to leave Egypt on Friday, according to the company.

The hotel said they died from natural causes and Egyptian authorites say their deaths were caused by circulation problems and respiratory failure.

She said: "The food is just disgusting, it's undercooked.

We will be contacting those customers due to travel to the Steigenberger Hotel in Hurghada in the next four weeks to offer alternative holiday options".

"A reasonable person can't help but wonder if there's a link between that illness and these deaths".

But Dieter Geiger, general manager at Aqua Magic, said there was no evidence to support an "increased incidence of illness" at the hotel, which he dismissed as "rash speculations".

A spokesperson for travel industry body ABTA said: "We are very sad to hear of the deaths of two British holidaymakers in Hurghada and our thoughts are with their family, friends and colleagues at this hard time".

Thomas Cook have revealed that they are "expanding" their investigation after a Burnley couple tragically died at a hotel in Egypt.
