WALL FAIL: Melania's Parents Become US Citizens

WALL FAIL: Melania's Parents Become US Citizens

Under US immigration law, Melania's parents would need to have had green cards for at least five years before they could apply for citizenship.

The first lady's Slovenian-born parents, Viktor and Amalija Knavs, were sworn in in New York City, their lawyer Michael Wildes said, adding that the couple received no preferential treatment.

President Donald Trump's in-laws, Viktor and Amalija Knavs, took the oath of citizenship, Wildes said.

Trump also often speaks out against the family-based immigration system at his rallies, saying it a pathway for terrorists to enter the country, the NYT report added. I've had the privilege of coming to this building for more than 30 years working with some of the finest families and individuals [.] This golden experiment, these doors that are in America, remain hinged open to handsome people as they have today.

She attended high school in the Slovenian capital, Ljubljana, and changed her name to Melania Knauss when she started modeling. "The application, the process, the interview was no different from anyone else's other than the security arrangements", their attorney Michael Wildes said on Thursday.

Mr Wildes told CNN that as of February, the couple was living in the United States on green cards - a status that allows them to live and work in the USA indefinitely and paves the way for citizenship.

Ana Navarro, a Republican strategist and political commentator, tweeted, "I guess when it's Melania's Family, it's "family reunification" and should be applauded". The first lady herself was granted citizenship in 2006.

The Knavses' citizenship ceremony was kept hush-hush at the Jacob K. Javits Federal Building.

The Knavs were sworn in as USA citizens on Thursday in Lower Manhattan, The New York Times reported.

Mr Knavs, 74, was a vehicle dealer, while his wife, who is 73, worked in a textile factory. That preferential program, popularly known as the "Einstein visa", is intended for immigrants with "extraordinary ability, [who] are an outstanding professor or researcher, or are a multinational executive or manager", according to the U.S. Customs and Immigration Services.

In family-based immigration, adult American citizens can petition for residency for their parents, adult married children and siblings.

It is not infrequently the site of protests, but on Thursday, things were quiet as the first lady's parents came and went.

Viktor is 74, two years older than President Donald Trump. One for the people who have no power, and one for the people who we are letting in through the VIP entrance. Now, we're certain his shameless hypocrisy sees no boundaries.
