White House wobbles on US flag after McCain death

Typical practice is for flags to remain at half-staff through the day of interment. The White House had lowered its flag to half-staff on Sunday, but shortly after midnight, it was back at full staff, in a clear break with precedent - which dictates that it be lowered until burial - and the USA flag code.

"On Sept. 2 ... a private memorial service will take place in the U.S. Naval Academy Chapel in Annapolis, Maryland, honouring the life of Sen".

President Trump ignored repeated requests for comment about McCain at three news events Monday. "Our hearts and prayers are with you!"

Mr McCain has been absent from the Senate for the most part of 2018, and some media reports said he last voted on December 7, 2017.

During the 2016 campaign, Mr. Trump mocked McCain's war service.

While the political world processes the death of senator, two-time presidential candidate, and former prisoner of war John McCain, his family and friends remember his dedication to his country and life of servitude.

President Donald Trump offered his condolences on Twitter to McCain's family but hasn't issued a presidential proclamation with an order lowering the flags.

There has been speculation Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey (R) could appoint Cindy McCain to fill her husband's seat until 2020, when there will be a special election for the right to finish out the final two years of McCain's term.

"Do not despair of our present difficulties but believe always in the promise and greatness of America, because nothing is inevitable here", McCain wrote shortly before his death.

Karen Travers tweeted "Flags at the White House were lowered to half staff this weekend for the passing of John McCain but this morning they are back to full staff".

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this twenty-seventh day of August, in the year of our Lord two thousand eighteen, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and forty-third.

According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, the flag should be flown at half-staff "at all federal buildings, grounds and naval vessels in the Washington, D.C., area on the day and day after the death of a United States senator, representative, territorial delegate, or the resident commissioner from the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico".

Senate leaders and the American Legion, nation's largest veterans' service organization, objected Monday to the flag being raised.

In addition to signing the proclamation, Trump announced that he'd asked Vice President Mike Pence to give an address at the ceremony honoring McCain at the Capitol on Friday.
