Boston the latest upset as progressive wave sweeps Democratic party

Boston City Councilor Ayanna Pressley scored an upset win in a MA primary Tuesday night and is set to become the state's first black congresswoman-especially since no Republican is running against her in the 7th Congressional District.

Rep. Michael Capuano, a 20-year veteran in Congress, conceded defeat Tuesday night in his first primary challenge since he took office.

In nearby Connecticut, Jahana Hayes is on track to become that state's first black woman to win a congressional seat if she prevails in November.

Supporters of Ayanna Pressley, Boston City Council member and Democratic candidate for congress, react to the news of her victory at the IBEW Local 103 in Dorchester, Massachusetts, on September 4, 2018.

No Republican is on the ballot for the seventh congressional district race in November, so the Pressley will most likely be heading to Washington in 2019. @AyannaPressley just shook up the world with her congressional victory. Bernie Sanders (D-Vt.), she later supported it. Capuano also backed Sanders' quixotic health care scheme, which would cost approximately $32.6 trillion, according to Mercatus scholar Charles Blahous. Boston Mayor Marty Walsh, who was also present, endorsed Jay Gonzalez for governor, praised the Democratic party for its unity, and personally congratulated Pressley.

Her campaign slogan - "Change Can't Wait" - connected the Democratic optimism of the early Barack Obama years to the urgency of Donald Trump's presidency.

Pressley opened her remarks by saying "I will tell you the truth: one, for the last six months, I've been double fisting Red Bull and cold brew".

"I fundamentally believe that the people closest to the pain should be closest to the power", Pressley said on the trail.

"I have been really furious about the constant charges being lobbed against me about identity politics that, by the way, are only lobbed against women and candidates of color", she said in one debate.

"It's about who I listen to and it's about who I govern with".

Ayanna Pressley is poised to make history.
