Brett Kavanaugh sexual harassment accusations: All you need to know

Trump answered questions about Kavanaugh, whose nomination is now in jeopardy in the Senate, as he left the White House to visit hurricane-stricken areas in North Carolina and SC. Republicans hope to have Kavanaugh confirmed by October 1, the start of the next Supreme Court term.

"I think we've had those kinds of vacancies before, and we certainly had over a one-year vacancy with Merrick Garland", she said. "And really it's up to the Senate".

"I think she must have had some sort of a awful situation". Ford's lawyer, however, now says she will not accept the offer to give her testimony under oath, demanding instead that the FBI investigate her claims first.

"If she shows up, that would be wonderful", Trump said.

Although Feinstein was told of Ford's claims in July and has vouched for her, she told Fox News on Tuesday that she "can't say everything's truthful". She said President George H.W. Bush had asked the FBI to investigate Anita Hill's allegations against Thomas.

In a tweet Tuesday night, Trump wrote: "The Supreme Court is one of the main reasons I got elected President". "He said very clearly and unequivocally, 'This did not happen'". Senator Dick Durbin said he had "a lot of questions" for Kavanaugh.

Mr Trump added that it would be "unfortunate" if Christine Blasey Ford did not turn up at a special Senate hearing into the claims on Monday, after her lawyer called for more time for the FBI to investigate.

Manafort cooperation could energise Mueller probe - legal experts
Manafort pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy against the United States and another of conspiracy to obstruct justice. Mr Trump went so far as to suggest in a television interview that plea deals with prosecutors "should nearly be illegal".

Ex-Trump campaign boss reaches plea deal
On Twitter on August 22, Trump wrote: "Unlike Michael Cohen, he refused to "break" - make up stories in order to get a 'deal". As much evidence as Mueller's team had against Manafort in the first trial, they have even more evidence in the second trial.

Now, Ford and Kavanaugh will both testify in a public hearing on Monday. The president said he was "totally supporting" Kavanaugh and felt "terribly" for him and his family.

"This is different circumstances, occurring in a whole different time", says Manley, warning about "blowback" if Republicans try to overreach and impugn Ford's motives for coming forward.

Brett Kavanaugh listens to Senators on day three of his confirmation hearing in the Senate Judiciary Committee to be Associate Justice of the Supreme Court on September 6, 2018.

Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein of California responded on Twitter by writing, "Fact check: The FBI can investigate Dr. Blasey Ford's allegations as part of its background investigation-that is their job". Democrats refused to participate, saying the seriousness of the charges merited a full FBI investigation.

After his nomination was announced in July, Bush voiced his support, for Kavanaugh, calling him "a fine husband, father and friend - and a man of the highest character".

"I understand that I have been identified by Dr. Christine Blasey Ford as the person she remembers as "PJ" who supposedly was present at the party she described in her statements to the Washington Post", the letter, penned by Smyth's attorney, Eric Bruce, reads.

The duelling testimony had been expected to take place Monday in a piece of blockbuster Washington theatre, putting both Trump's bid to tilt the Supreme Court to the right and political momentum ahead of November midterm congressional elections into play.
