Federer knocked out of US Open by Aussie Millman

Cilic defeated No. 10 seed David Goffin pretty handily in their match on Monday, taking down Goffin in three straight sets.

Novak Djokovic has sweated his way to a round of 16 victory over Joao Sousa as the heat returned to the US Open, setting up a potentially mouth-watering quarter-final meeting with Roger Federer.

As the temperatures rose so did the tempers, with both players engaging in animated arguments with chair umpire James Keothavong.

Federer, like any great champion, refused to throw in the towel and showed emotion for the first time after breaking for a 4-2 lead in the fourth. "Definitely a player I've looked up to throughout my career", he said before the match.

The biggest concern for Djokovic might well have been the conditions as the heat returned to NY after a few days of relief.

The 13-times grand slam victor had made easy work of the opening set, breaking Sousa twice, the second time to close out the set.

"I've got to control the controllable and the one thing I can control is the fight in me".

A Federer double-fault enabled Millman to pull even at 5-all and Federer lost his serve again when his backhand sailed long, evening the match at a set apiece.

But that only delayed the inevitable as Nishikori kept his focus to seal the win and extend his ideal record against the German to 3-0.

Millman said the victory had yet to sink in.

"I'm probably in a little bit of disbelief", said Millman.

He reached the quarterfinals for an 11th consecutive appearance in NY as he bids for a third US Open championship and 14th Grand Slam trophy.

There was little sign of what was in store for the five-times champion when he took the first set easily, before world No. 55 Millman turned the tables to win the second then held his nerve through two tiebreaks to secure the victory in three hours and 34 minutes.

Next up for the Australian is a quarterfinal match-up against sixth seed Novak Djokovic.

Although Federer won the first three games, he endured an awkward fall after leaping for an early overhead and seemed to be struggling for his usual rhythm from the outset.

Defeating Mikhail Kukushkin 6-4, 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 previously, the young Aussie had to be booted off the court because there were so many people lining up for autographs and photographs.
