Former Arizona Senator Jon Kyl to replace John McCain

Former Arizona Senator Jon Kyl to replace John McCain

Political figures were quick to react to the news that former Republican senator Jon Kyl will be filling the Senate seat of late Arizona Sen. "Kyl yet. What I have gotten is a commitment to serve Arizona through at least this session of Congress, and it's my hope that he serves longer", Ducey said. "I think it was to his benefit she [did] so".

Kyl, who served with McCain from 1995 to 2013, could possibly serve in the Senate until the general election in 2020.

In a prepared statement, the governor's office said Kyl's "expertise on water and natural resource issues will be very beneficial to our state as we face new challenges in those areas", noting that Arizona State University's Kyl Center for Water Policy is named for him.

Kyl has agreed to step in for McCain through the end of this year, the Republic said.

"I look forward to welcoming Jon Kyl back to the Senate", he said.

He served alongside McCain for almost two decades before retiring in 2013, and served as senate minority whip during his service, making him a key Republican leader.

McCain's widow, Cindy McCain, confirmed the choice Tuesday ahead of the announcement, The Associated Press reported. Jon Kyl to the Senate following GOP Sen. McCain's opposition to repealing Obamacare was just one of many problematic moments for the Republican Party.

"We gather here to mourn the passing of American greatness - the real thing, not cheap rhetoric from men who will never come near the sacrifice he gave so willingly", McCain said. By picking a "caretaker" replacement - i.e., someone who would not seek reelection in 2020 - Ducey could avoid alienating either contingent, and allow Republican primary voters a chance to choose the seat's long-term occupant.

Some of the speeches were more explicit, like that of McCain's daughter, Meghan, who went straight for Trump's throat: "The America of John McCain has no need to be made great again, because America was always great".

McCain died on August 25 at 81 years old - just one day after announcing he would no longer seek treatment for an aggressive brain tumor.

Filling McCain's seat marks a turning point in Arizona political history.

While their remarks made clear their admiration for him, they also represented a repudiation of President Donald Trump's brand of tough-talking, divisive politics.

Representative Steny Hoyer, the No. 2 Democrat in the House of Representatives, said given that the Arizona governor was "not going to appoint somebody who is going to vote with us, it's a pretty good appointment". "Sen. Kyl is a beacon of integrity".
