A MAN armed with a knife and iron bar has stabbed several people in Paris, leaving four seriously injured.

He was described as being of Pakistani or Afghan origin, and began "slashing passers-by" on the Loire Quay in the north of the city, according to reports.

Eyewitness Youssef Najah, 28, said he was walking beside the canal when he saw a man running and holding a knife about 25-30 cm (10-11 inches) long.

Seven people have been injured after the attack including two English tourists.

The pair were then attacked, he said.

The Foreign Office said it was investigating the incident and police investigation has been launched into attempted murder, according to a judicial source.
