Gordon weakens to tropical depression in coastal states

Gordon became a tropical storm after having strengthened rapidly overnight, and late Monday afternoon, the National Weather Service issued a hurricane warning for the mouth of the Pearl River, which divides Louisiana and MS in the central Gulf.

A storm surge warning is in effect for Biloxi, Mississippi, to Dauphin Island.

Packing winds of 65 miles per hour, the storm is just 9 miles per hour from hurricane-strength, which it is predicted to attain before coming ashore. It made landfall late Tuesday.

The NHC's hurricane warning for Tropical Storm Gordon covers all of coastal MS and Alabama, with a tropical storm warning reaching to Morgan City, Alabama, and Florida's Okaloosa-Walton County Line. This zone is expected to witness the most severe storm effects.

A Tropical Storm Warning was issued along the South Florida coast from Golden Beach to Bonita Beach, and for the Florida Keys from Craig Key to Ocean Reef, including Florida Bay. The wind and rain won't last too long, as the storm will quickly trek north and west through Wednesday.

People of Louisiana and Alabama are requested to remain safe as the water levels might rise by 5 feet throughout the region and also in the central parts of the Gulf coast.

A storm surge covered barrier islands as the storm blew through, and some inland roadways were flooded by the rain.

Tropical Depression Six becomes Tropical Storm Florence

According to the Governor, 63 high water vehicles, 39 boats and four helicopters will be moved to the greater New Orleans area.

The system would be named Gordon should it become a tropical or subtropical storm.

South Florida and parts of the Gulf Coast could see 3 to 6 inches of rain, and locally southern Florida could see up to 8 inches of rain.

The National Weather Service said conditions were "possible" for tornadoes in the affected parts of South Florida on Monday night. The exception to this statement may be immediately near the Emerald Coast from Destin to Pensacola, where tropical storm force winds and heavy rain is still a possibility. This inundation could flood and potentially damage low-lying roads, homes, and businesses.

"The deepest water will occur along the immediate coast near and to the east of the landfall location, where the surge will be accompanied by large waves", the centre said.

The warning is related to potential Tropical Cyclone 7 which, if it organizes into a tropical storm, will become Tropical Storm Gordon.

Maximum sustained winds are near 70 miles per hour with higher gusts.
