Here’s our first look at Joaquin Phoenix as The Joker

Todd Phillips has released the first official photograph of Joaquin Phoenix in Joker as Arthur Fleck. The filmmaker in question this time being Todd Phillips, best known for the Hangover series. And (spoiler alert) his caption simply stated the Joker's real first name: "Arthur".

If what you're seeing isn't what you were expecting of Batman's greatest nemesis, that's because this film tells the story of how Arthur turned villainous.

Joaquin Phoenix is slated to play the title character of Joker, with Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz and Marc Maron playing supporting roles. The pic shows Phoenix looking at the camera, with a slight smile on his visage. And sure, in all likelihood, yes, he's Gotham City's so-called Clown Prince of Crime. As Joker himself says in Alan Moore and Brian Bolland's The Killing Joke (which this movie may take some inspiration from), "If I'm going to have a past, I prefer it to be multiple choice!" It will be made on a budget of 55 million dollars and will be more of a dark character study than the usual comic-book caper.

Eliud Kipchoge sets new world record in Berlin Marathon win
Kenya's Eliud Kipchoge knees down after winning the Berlin Marathon setting a new world record on September 16, 2018 in Berlin . Kipchoge came agonisingly close to sporting immortality by almost running the first sub two-hour marathon previous year .

On that note, according to a Hollywood Reporter story last month, both Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill are on their way out as Batman and Superman respectively in the DC Extended Universe.

We do not yet have the vintage Joker look of Phoenix yet. It is the complete opposite of the version that Jared Leto gave to fans, but that look was over-the-top and also turned many fans off.

Joker (or whatever it ends up being called) hits cinemas October 4th, 2019.
