Jon Kyl sworn in as USA senator replacing McCain

Jon Kyl sworn in as USA senator replacing McCain

Former Sen Jon Kyl has only agreed to a brief appointment filling the late John McCain's senate seat.

The appointee named by Ducey could serve in the Senate until the 2020 election, but Kyl said he was only committing to serving in the role through the current session of Congress. This is the firm helping President Trump's nominee for the U.S. Supreme Court, Brett Kavanaugh, get through confirmation hearings that began this week.

Kyl said he made a decision to return to the Senate because of his sense of duty "to the state I love", adding, "I'm putting my country first just as this seat's previous occupant did every single day". He said in a statement, "I've asked Sen". John McCain, who died last month at the age of 81. "There is no one more qualified and Arizona is well served", Flake tweeted.

Once he is sworn in Wednesday, Kyl will cast crucial votes in the coming weeks on Kavanaugh's nomination, government spending and possibly billions for a U.S. -Mexico border wall and perhaps another round of tax cuts. "John and I served the people of Arizona for almost two decades, and in that spirit, along with Senator [Jeff] Flake, I will do my best to ensure Arizonans are well represented in the Senate".

"I think McCain would be very happy with the pick. He understands how the Senate functions, and will make an immediate and positive impact benefiting all Arizonans", Ducey said.

McCain's widow Cindy tweeted out the expected appointment about 30 minutes before the governor was expected to hold a news conference. The victor of that special election will fill the remaining two years of McCain's term.

Jon Kyl served with John McCain as a United States Senator representing Arizona from 1995 to 2013.

McCain's widow, Cindy McCain , confirmed the choice Tuesday ahead of the announcement, The Associated Press reported . Kyl, who served with McCain from 1995 to 2013, could possibly serve in the Senate until the general election in 2020.

Kyl will be rejoining the Senate at a time when Democrats are eager to take control of the chamber in this year's midterms.

Kyl said he accepted the appointment because he is putting country first, like McCain did so many times during his political career.

Ducey's choice of Kyl comes after an emotional week.

With a nod toward McCain, Kyl said the president's "desire to jump into the middle of or be in the middle of a fight - and by the way that reminds me of somebody - can be detrimental in the end to what he's trying to achieve". "I don't really have a relationship with President Trump". In Kyl, Ducey tapped a brand-name Arizona politician who was close with McCain and once ascended to the top ranks of Senate leadership. By state law, Ducey's pick had to be from McCain's party.

Representative Steny Hoyer, the No. 2 Democrat in the House, said given that the Arizona governor was "not going to appoint somebody who is going to vote with us, it's a pretty good appointment".

If he remains through 2020, he could face a vote on repealing the Affordable Care Act, which the GOP failed to scuttle in 2017 largely because of McCain's thumbs-down.
