'Judgement day has come': Gloria Allred reacts to Bill Cosby's sentencing

In April, Cosby was convicted of three counts of aggravated indecent assault for drugging and assaulting Constand, a Temple University employee.

He then handed Cosby a prison sentence of three to 10 years, the first such celebrity sentencing of the #MeToo era. "The time has come", Judge O'Neill said.

Prosecutors called on some of Cosby's other accusers as they pushed for a lengthy sentence, with a number of them, including model Janice Dickinson, present at the sentencing hearing. The time has come.

"Bill Cosby seeing the inside of a prison cell sends a strong message that predators - no matter who they are, from Hollywood to Wall Street to the Supreme Court - can no longer be protected at the expense of victims", she said.

Still, the prosecution's Kevin Steele said Cosby should "serve [the] sentence that he has earned". He says the comedian's lawyers wouldn't let him discuss certain matters, including the sexual assault that led to his conviction or his admission that he gave quaaludes to women before sex. The Constand case is the only allegation that has resulted in a conviction.

Cosby was also asked if he understood the terms of his sentencing, most notably that he'll now be included in the state of Pennsylvania's sex-offender registry.

In a victim impact statement read in court, Constand described the harrowing toll that Cosby's assault took, essentially ruining her chances of ever having a normal life.

O'Neill also chose to designate Cosby a "sexually violent predator" under Pennsylvania law.

After the judge rejected a defense request to release Cosby on bail pending an appeal, he was slapped in handcuffs, and led out of the courtroom in his shirt and braces, his tie and blazer removed.

"It is who he is behind the mask", Steele said, his voice quivering and his eyes filling with tears.

Cosby's key witness in the retrial was Marguerite Jackson, a former friend of Constand's who testified that Constand was planning to swindle money from a "high-profile celebrity". The designation means that Cosby, who is legally blind, will be subject to lifetime reporting requirements, meaning that he will have to advise law enforcement authorities of where he is residing. They had also asked the judge to levy a $US25,000 ($35,000) fine on Cosby and make him pay court costs. He will be classified as a "sexually violent predator" for the remainder of his life.

"It was very touching", Feden said of that credit from her superior.

In a sentencing memorandum, prosecutors said that "extraordinary display of disrespect" was evidence of "who this convicted criminal defendant actually is". The defence requested house arrest, saying Cosby is too old and helpless to do time behind bars.

Constand says she now lives alone with her two dogs, "stuck in a holding pattern" as a middle-aged woman because she has trouble trusting people.

O'Neill said he would not hold it against Cosby that he didn't speak or testify.

Cosby, whose estimated fortune once topped $400 million, broke barriers in the 1960s as the first black actor to star in a network show, "I Spy".
