Asked about who he thinks should win FIFA's The Best, which is between Ronaldo, Salah and Modric, he responded: "I would give it to our player, Modric, I'm clear about that".

Messi has dominated the award along with Ronaldo over the past decade, but the Barcelona star has been omitted from the top three for the first time since 2006.

However, something unusual has occurred in 2018, with the notable name of Messi missing off the shortlist for the Federation Internationale de Football Association best player of the year.

The awards ceremony will take place in London on September 24.

Messi and Ronaldo have been the only winners of world football's main individual award from FIFA since 2008.

However, his £100 million move to the Old Lady seems to have made Juve favourites to win the European elite club competition.

Norway and Lyon's Ada Hegenrberg, Dzsenifer Marozsan, of Germany and Lyon, and Marta, of Brazil and Orlando Pride, have been shortlisted for the women's prize.
