'Mob rule' rocks US Senate hearing for judge

The father of a Parkland shooting victim approached Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh after the judge's Senate confirmation hearing Tuesday. He put out his hand to Kavanaugh, who paused for a moment before turning away as a security guard stepped in. "That's a violation of judicial independence", he said.

Roe, of course, is the 1973 Supreme Court decision that declared abortion a constitutionally protected right.

So in that sense, Tuesday's start to the Kavanaugh hearings marks the natural next step in the Republicans' devastatingly successful strategy to pack the federal courts. He also saying being a good judge means paying attention to words that are written-Constitution, statutes.

Sen. Chuck Grassley, an Iowa Republican who's the Judiciary Committee's chairman, pushed back on those calls, and outgoing Sen.

The Supreme Court nominee is set to answer questions from senators throughout the day for the first time Wednesday.

It was no less than Senator Grassley and Senator Cornyn who, during the Kagan nomination, said, no, we need to see the documents before the hearing. He said plenty of information on Kavanaugh has already been made public, including 415,000 pages turned over to the Judiciary Committee. Democrats signaled that they would press Kavanaugh in depth on abortion and gun rights, among other issues, when they get to question the nominee.

"We can not possibly move forward", Harris, a potential 2020 Democratic presidential contender, said.

Almost two dozen protestors were removed by Capitol Police from the hearing room shortly after it began, amid interruptions by multiple Democrats requesting that the hearing adjourn. There were no signs of Republican defections. Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer complained it was impossible to go through them in time.

Republican Orrin Hatch accused Democratic senators of political opportunism, noting, "We have folks who want to run for president", though he did not mention any by name. Susan Collins (R-Maine) and Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) ― have both voted to confirm all of President Donald Trump's other anti-abortion judges.

Irked by a protester who interrupted him, Sen. So Republicans have released only those documents they consider most relevant - about 440,000 pages for senators to see, and fewer than 300,000 publicly.

Gun control advocates say that if Kavanaugh is confirmed to the supreme court, which is now divided between justices who support gun rights and gun control, he may serve as the swing vote to make state and federal assault weapon ban unconstitutional, as well as to tear down local restrictions on carrying guns in public.

While about 500,000 pages of documents have been turned over from his early years in the White House counsel's office, a larger set of documents from his time as staff secretary to President George W. Bush won't be released. The job involved managing paper flow from advisers to Bush. But Republicans countered that lawmakers can easily assess Kavanaugh's record from the hundreds of opinions he's written during a dozen years as a D.C. federal appeals court judge, including more than a dozen opinions where his reasoning was adopted by the Supreme Court.

Kavanaugh sat, fingers intertwined, quietly staring ahead at the committee members as audience members screamed while being dragged out of the hearing room.
