Modric wins Federation Internationale de Football Association best player of the year award

Modric wins Federation Internationale de Football Association best player of the year award

The awards were held for the third year running after football's governing body ended its six-year association with the Ballon d'Or.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino presented Modric with the award.

Asked if he had spoken to his former Madrid team-mate Ronaldo, UEFA Men's Player of the Year Modric said: "No".

After a public vote on FIFA.com of fans from around the world, Salah's goal, scored for Liverpool against Everton on 10 December 2017, was selected as the top goal by fans with 38% of the vote.

That is why Modric has the better chance of winning the award by the virtue of his silver medal from the Federation Internationale de Football Association world cup in Russia. "This is also for my family, without who I would not be the player I am".

With no Cristiano in London, the bets are on Luka Modric having won the Champions League with Real Madrid and reached the World Cup final with Croatia, only to be beaten despite his spectacular performance.

Among the others honored in London were Peru's travelling supporters, who lit up their first World Cup in 36 years and German player Lennart Thy. "I would like to thank the whole team".

In the FIFA's women's coach of the year award category, Matildas coach Alen Stajcic was pipped by Olympique Lyonnais Feminin boss Reynald Pedros.

Mohamed Salah had to overcome some stiff competition to claim this year's Puskas Award.

Former Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois won the goalkeeper of the year prize, beating Leicester's Kasper Schmeichel and Hugo Lloris of Spurs.

The Egypt worldwide came out on top when it came to the Puskas Award, however, as his stunning effort against Everton was voted the best goal of the year in the face of stiff competition from the likes of Ronaldo and Gareth Bale.

The players had their say, and so did the fans, who voted for the Puskás and FIFA Fan Awards, with Mo Salah the ultimate victor of the Puskás Award thanks to his outstanding goal against Everton.
