Monday Rally Comes Up Short — TT Postscript

"We've got kind of a mess out there", he said. It's tough to go from being on Ryder Cup teams, being on Presidents Cup teams, to outside the top 100 in the world.

Rose could have won in regulation but lipped out on the last hole to force the playoff.

The 38-year-old narrowly missed a putt for par though, leaving the pair level on 20-under and forcing the additional hole.

He also could have qualified for the U.S. Open by being among the top 60 in the world ranking next spring.

He didn't get a trophy on this trip.

Rose joins Nick Faldo, Lee Westwood and Luke Donald among those from England to hold the top spot.

"I now have another string to the bow; if you're trying to sum up my career in three sentences - world number one would be right up there with the other achievements".

"It's boyhood dreams", he told the Golf Channel of passing Dustin Johnson and Brooks Koepka for the No. 1 ranking.

But there was cause for concern for Team Europe in Philadelphia as Casey pulled out of the third FedEx Cup Playoff event ahead of the fourth round belatedly getting under way on Monday. Woods finished Saturday with another four-under round, then waited out the rain on Sunday and teed off Monday at -12.

Hawaii Braces for More Rain as Hurricane Olivia Barrels Toward Island
Hurricane Hector has returned to a Category 4 storm and picked-up speed as it moves towards Hawaii's Big Island. On Saturday, Olivia is forecast to be the fifth hurricane to enter the Central Pacific this hurricane season.

But he missed the green on the 10th and made bogey. He found a bunker on the par-3 14th for another bogey.

As day broke and the rains lightened, opportunity came along for Bradley, and he took full advantage. Woods wound up with a 65.

For the sixth time in his career, Woods shot 263 or better.

Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy finished two shots behind, while Tiger Woods was three back. "I'd hate to round off the season with three seconds, but that could be good enough next week, you just never know". Once it was over, he was able to do what he's seen so many of his colleagues do so many times before - embrace his family as a champion. "It's been a hard road back and I just can't believe it". He had his fourth back surgery in April of last year, and at this time last year he had just been cleared to chip and putt. He's in fifth at the moment, and that's a pretty good result. That projects him to move up 22 spots into the 30th position in the FedEx Cup, which would bump out Jordan Spieth.

He had to rally for a 66 on Saturday, and while he was 11 shots out of the lead, another round would give him a chance to move back into the top 30, avoid violating a new policy and save the PGA Tour a headache.

That means he will have played only 24 tournaments this season. They are exempt from the policy by playing 25 events.

Still to be determined is the penalty.

No one needs to play Monday as much as Spieth.
