Mueller Will Accept Written Answers From Trump About Russian Collusion

Giuliani, whom Trump hired in April amid a change in the president's legal representation in the special counsel probe, said that his team was preparing a lengthy report which they planned to release at the same time as Mueller's to "refute its expected findings".

But on another significant aspect of the investigation - whether the president tried to obstruct the inquiry itself - Mueller and his investigators understood that issues of executive privilege could complicate their pursuit of a presidential interview and did not ask for written responses on that matter, according to the letter, which was sent Friday.

Trump then suggested that the special counsel personally dislikes him, and claimed Mueller's team of prosecutors had a partisan vendetta against him.

Trump was brief when asked about his interview of Mueller to replace Comey as Federal Bureau of Investigation director before deputy attorney general Rod Rosenstein named Mueller special counsel.

Jay Sekulow, counsel to the president, said: "We continue to maintain an ongoing dialogue with the Office of Special Counsel". In March, Mueller raised the prospect of subpoenaing Trump if he refused to be questioned voluntarily.

The question of whether Trump will submit to an interview has been a long-running debate inside the president's legal team. That's an effort that could lead to a Supreme Court challenge by the White House. Trump has said there was no collusion and has called the Mueller probe a "witch hunt".

In an interview with the conservative Daily Caller, President Trump expounds upon his oft-stated theory that Robert Mueller has several conflicts of interest that should prevent him from investigating Trump's web of criminality and misconduct.

Mueller so far has not requested to ask any questions about obstruction, but included a line in his message to Trump's attorneys that he may want to ask questions about obstruction at some point in the future. "You know, he's Comey's best friend", said Trump.
