North Korean charged in crippling Sony hack, WannaCry virus

The Justice Department alleged that Park was a member of a government-sponsored hacking team known to the private sector as the "Lazarus Group", and worked for North Korean government front company Chosun Expo Joint Venture (Korea Expo Joint Venture or KEJV) to support the North Korean government's "malicious" cyber actions.

USA authorities say Park Jin Hyok was part of the state-sponsored "Lazarus Group".

The hackers used the same aliases and accounts from the Sony attack when they sent spear-phishing emails to several US defence contractors, including Lockheed Martin, and others in South Korea, officials said.

U.S. prosecutors have charged a North Korean man alleged to have been involved in creating the malicious software used to cripple the UK's National Health Service.

Sony Pictures canceled release of "The Interview", a satire depicting the assassination of North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un, in 2014.

The FBI said at the time it had recovered evidence connecting North Korea to the attack and others in South Korea.

A month later, U.S. officials blamed North Korea for the attack, an accusation backed by several organisations, including one linked to the South Korean government. There has been no communication between the U.S. and North Korean government about a possible extradition, the official said.

In unrelated cases, the USA has previously charged hackers from Iran as well as hackers in the Chinese military. In 2016, hackers breached the Bangladesh Bank's servers and made off with $81 million.

In 2014, for instance, the Obama administration charged five Chinese military hackers with a series of digital break-ins at American companies, and a year ago, the Justice Department charged Russian hackers with an intrusion at Yahoo.

The Justice Department charged Park with one count of conspiracy to commit computer fraud, and another count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud.

Trump met with leader Kim Jong Un earlier this year and has sought to secure a full commitment from the country to denuclearize the Korean Peninsula.

Last December the North Korean government called allegations that it was behind the ransomware "absurd" and a "grave political provocation". Trump even sent out a tweet this morning thanking Kim for saying nice things about him.
