Phil Mickelson's patriotic reaction to making Ryder Cup team

Mickelson, who has played on every Ryder Cup team since 1995, boosted his case by winning a World Golf Championships event in Mexico in March, and he made nine birdies Monday in a closing round of 63.

USA captain Jim Furyk added them to his team Monday evening as wild-card selections, along with Bryson DeChambeau.

U.S. captain Jim Furyk will name three of his four wildcard picks on Tuesday, and after DeChambeau's recent successes, it is unthinkable he will not be included among them.

DeChambeau, Mickelson and Woods finished 9th, 10th and 11th in the points list standings, respectively, after the top eight players had qualified at the end of the PGA Championship.

American Bryson DeChambeau held tough for his second consecutive FedEx Cup playoffs victory to ensure he will top the rankings heading into the US PGA Tour's season-ending Tour Championship later this month. Furyk will make three selections on Tuesday, and a fourth after the BMW Championship.

The 2018 Ryder Cup takes place September 25-30 in Paris. The tournament is why all the players are now in the area.

"It's obvious that the one thing that has been missing is for our team to go over to Europe and win", said Mickelson, who has played on three winning USA teams - but never overseas.

"He has been instrumental, not only in helping the captains before me, but me as well", Furyk said. He declined to speak with media after his round, but is still a prime candidate to earn a captain's pick for the Ryder Cup.

Francesco Molinari, Justin Rose, Tyrrell Hatton, Tommy Fleetwood, Jon Rahm, Rory McIlroy, Alex Noren and Thorbjorn Olesen will line up for the European side.
