Purchasing Russian missiles may invite sanctions: US amid India's plans

Beijing called on the United States on Friday to withdraw sanctions it imposed on a Chinese military organisation for buying Russian weapons or "bear the consequences".

Beijing's decision to purchase Russian Su-35 fighter jets and S-400 surface-to-air missile system drew Washington's ire.

China's Equipment Development Department (EDD) is the branch of the Chinese military responsible for weapons and equipment.

As part of Thursday's announcement, the USA also added 33 names to a list of people who could trigger sanctions for their ties to the Russian military.

They restrict EDD's access to global financial markets by blocking foreign exchange transactions under USA jurisdiction or any transactions in the USA financial system.

"It would be good for them to also recall the notion of global stability, which they recklessly upset by whipping up tensions in Russian-US relations", Ryabkov said, warning, "It's foolish to play with fire, because things could get unsafe".

The US action violated the basic principles of worldwide relations, the ministry of foreign affairs (MFA), Geng Shuang said.

Peskov said that "Washington's continued sanctions hysterics" dealt a new blow to U.S. -Russia ties but could not immediately say if Moscow would retaliate, or how. Moscow denies any effort to meddle in us politics.

Moscow and Beijing lashed out Friday at Washington's new anti-Russian sanctions that also target China for the first time, warning the United States could face consequences.

The Trump administration also blacklisted 33 people and entities associated with the Russian military and intelligence services, adding them to a list under the 2017 sanctions law known as the Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA).

The purchase violated a 2017 law meant to punish the government of President Vladimir Putin for interfering in USA elections and other activities. "CAATSA sanctions in this context are not meant to undermine the defense capabilities of any particular country", the official told reporters on a conference call. "The possession of this military equipment is very important for China".

"Today's actions are not meant to undermine the military capabilities or combat readiness of any country", the State Department said in a statement, "but rather to impose costs on Russian Federation in response to its interference in the United States election process, its unacceptable behavior in eastern Ukraine, and other malign activities".

The US Department of State in a statement said the actions were not meant to "undermine the military capabilities or combat readiness of any country".

Collin Koh, a security analyst at Singapore's S Rajaratnam School of International Studies, said the sanctions would do little to counter the evolving research and development relationship between China and Russian Federation.

And in November 2015, China became the first overseas client to buy Russia's most advanced fighter jet when it signed a US$2.5 billion contract for 24 Su-35s. Turkey has been warned by the US and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation that there could be consequences for its planned deployment of Russia's S-400 missile defence system.

The Russians named for CAATSA blacklisting have all been named previously under other USA sanctions regimes.

China's foreign ministry demanded the USA cancel the measure, as Moscow also lambasted the sanctions and warned that the Trump administration was "playing with fire". It can target stealth warplanes, such as the Pentagon's latest F-35 fighter jet.

US officials said that the USA could consider similar action against other countries taking delivery of Russian fighter jets and missiles.
