'The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel' takes early lead at Emmy Awards

The spendthrift Netflix beat out HBO for bragging rights for the most Emmy wins, racking up seven trophies to the premium cable net's half-dozen.

But for the mugging of hosts Colin Jost and Michael Che and a number of drop-ins by their "Saturday Night Live" cast mates, NBC wasn't particularly well represented on the dais; of the broadcast-high 16 nominations the network received in the televised categories, it came away with just one piece of hardware, for Best Variety Sketch Series.

The glittering gala in downtown Los Angeles will see "The Handmaid's Tale" face off with record-breaking HBO fantasy epic "Game of Thrones" for top honors - especially the coveted best drama prize.

Awards shows in general have faced big drops in audience.

Helping out Netflix's total this year was Claire Foy who won outstanding lead actress in a drama series for her portrayal of a young Queen Elizabeth in "The Crown". But in 2018 the television academy bucked that trend by mostly rejecting repeat winners in favor of first-time champs.

"One of the things I love the most about this show.it's about a woman who is finding her voice anew", Ms. Brosnahan said.

The Biggest Snubs and Surprises of the 2018 Emmys
Peter Dinklage won for Game of Thrones , and Thandie Newton was chosen for her supporting role in sci-fi series Westworld . NBC will be broadcasting the awards show live on both the West (5 p.m.) and East Coast (8 p.m.).

Manafort cooperation could energise Mueller probe - legal experts
Manafort pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy against the United States and another of conspiracy to obstruct justice. Mr Trump went so far as to suggest in a television interview that plea deals with prosecutors "should nearly be illegal".

As Hurricane Florence nears Carolinas, one million told to evacuate
Meteorologists expect Hurricane Florence to be a Category 3 or a Category 4 storm when she makes landfall in North Carolina. AccuWeather meteorologist Brett Rossi said the ground in North and SC and Virginia is already saturated from recent rains.

"This year, the audience is allowed to drink in their seats".

The Emmys had a real-life dramatic moment when winning director Glenn Weiss, noting his mother had died two weeks ago, proposed to his girlfriend, Jan Svendsen. Though I guess you could call that rubber-stamping too since it was King's third win in four years - without a doubt this new voting system has been especially kind to the veteran actress.

Amazon's "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel", about a 1950s housewife who turns to standup comedy, took home the Emmy for best comedy series.

In a fowl-mouthed interview after the show, Emmy victor John Oliver exclaimed angrily when asked if he thought the president not being mentioned meant that Hollywood was moving on.

During the Primetime telecast, Netflix won 7 Emmys, HBO won 6, Amazon won 5, and FX won 5.
