Trump criticizes A.G. Sessions for charges against Rep. Collins

The two were the first members of Congress to endorse Trump after he announced his bid for president in 2015, at a time when few others did.

The White House had no comment on Trump's tweets, but said he made a decision to not leave the White House and focus on trade calls. He calls both "Obama era, [sic] investigations" - despite both men's alleged wrongdoing taking place in 2017 - and suggests Sessions created an unnecessary headache.

Last month Duncan Hunter, a California representative, was charged with the misuse of campaign funds while Chris Collins of NY was indicted for insider trading.

He tweeted: "This is a awful situation and Attorney General Jeff Sessions should stop this Rigged Witch Hunt right now, before it continues to stain our country any further".

The Justice Department also began investigating Hunter previous year, with the House Ethics Committee announcing in March 2017 that it was holding off on taking action against Hunter because the Justice Department had launched a criminal investigation into his use of campaign funds.

The President's tweet is "so contrary to the traditions of the Department of Justice", Toobin said Tuesday.

Journalist John Nichols pointed out that Trump's flagrant attempt to use his authority to favor his own political party in an upcoming election by directing federal prosecutors to ignore two congressmen's allegations of criminal conduct, amounts to the definition of an impeachable offense.

The president apparently was referring to the current investigations into GOP Reps.

"This is evidence of serious crime here", Napolitano said.

United States political scientist and columnist Brian Klass called Mr Trump's outburst "insane".

U.S. Senator Brian Schatz, a Democrat, questioned Trump's comments and whether they were legal. Rarely, though, has he made it so explicit that he views the Justice Department as a political tool that is now being misused. "In his world they swore an oath to him, not (the) constitution and laws", Schatz wrote on Twitter.

Mr Trump asked the attorney general to end special counsel Robert Mueller's probe on 1 August.

Last week, Trump told Bloomberg the attorney general was safe in his job until November but declined to say if he would keep Sessions in the role beyond then. USA intelligence agencies have concluded Russian Federation tried to help Trump win the 2016 election, but the Kremlin denies meddling.
