Whitsundays shark attack: 46-year-old woman in critical condition

A young girl has been attacked by a shark at the same Queensland island where a Tasmanian mother was mauled less than 24 hours earlier.

The RACQ CQ Rescue helicopter had been in the vicinity of the incident, tasked to a beacon search in Proserpine, when the four-man crew received the call, arriving on scene in 15 minutes.

She had "altered levels of consciousness and significant amount of pain", Ms Eastwick said.

She was airlifted to Mackay Base Hospital where she underwent emergency surgery.

On Friday, a Queensland Shark Control Program contractor will deploy three shark control drumlines - a system of buoys "designed to remove larger, unsafe sharks from an area", according to the Fisheries spokesman.

The RACQ CQ Rescue helicopter is circling overhead at the moment. "Shark attacks in these waters are rare", he said.

The girl suffered significant blood loss and was given three pints of blood en route to Mackay Base Hospital.

"Given how serious her injuries were and how far from shore and from medical help they were, without the rescue helicopter I don't think she would have made it back to the mainland alive", Mr McCauley said.
