China says movie star missing 3 months owes $130M in taxes, penalties

Fan Bingbing has not been seen in public since July, following claims of tax evasion.

Fan and companies related to her were ordered to pay around $42 million in late taxes and fees, along with a fine of $86 million.

Although Ms Fan denied the accusations and Mr Cui eventually walked back his claims, China's State Administration of Taxation announced shortly after that it was looking into the claims of tax evasion involving celebrities.

The tax authority's notice was the first official mention in months of the 37-year-old actress, who vanished from the public eye amid bubbling controversy over tax evasion and inflated contracts in China's entertainment industry.

Fan would not be investigated for criminal responsibility for tax evasion as long as the taxes, fines and late fees amounting to almost 900 million yuan €112m (£100 million) were paid on time, the report said.

The Jiangsu provincial tax bureau delivered its judgments to Fan on Sunday, Xinhua news agency said. The contracts alleged that Fan exploited a double-billing system, known as "yin yang contracts", to earn $7.5 million for a 2003 film while only paying taxes on $1.5 million. I am ashamed of what I have done, and I deeply regret my actions. "Here, I sincerely apologize to everyone". "Without the Party and the state's good policies, without the love from the people, there would have been no Fan Bingbing".

In a letter posted on her official account on the Twitter-like platform Weibo, Fan said she fully accepted the authorities' decision, would overcome "all difficulties" to pay the penalties, and step up supervision of her companies. "I failed my country which nurtured me; I failed the society which trusted me; I failed the fans who liked me", she wrote to her 61 million followers. I would really like to ask for everyone's forgiveness.

The announcement gave no indication as to Fan's whereabouts but indicated her agent was being held by police for allegedly obstructing the investigation.

A statement released by Fan's studio previously said she was the victim of "slander", but did not dispute the authenticity of the documents Cui released.

Fan Bingbing has been China's highest-paid celebrity for the past four years, according to Forbes, taking in (a reported) 300 million yuan ($46.8 million) last year.
