In August, the Ted Cruz campaign issued one of the weirdest soundbites of the entire midterm-election season when Emily Miller, the spokesperson for the U.S. Senator from Texas, said that his Democratic opponent, Beto O'Rourke, is "like a Triple Meat Whataburger liberal who is out of touch with Texas values".

During a segment on climate change and oil taxes: "Senator Cruz is not going to be honest with you", O'Rourke said.

"He's dishonest. It's why the president called him "Lyin" Ted, ' and it's why the nickname stuck, because it's true", said the three-term congressman from El Paso, who is trailing the GOP incumbent in the polls.

Cruz, who recent polls show is maintaining a high single-digits lead in the race against O'Rourke, shot back at his Democratic challenger.

On Tuesday, however, O'Rourke lambasted Cruz as a pawn of political action committees, urging voters to "follow the money" when analyzing the Republican senator's support of tax cuts, accusing him of contributing to income equality not seen since the Gilded Age. In the first, Davis mocks Cruz for courting President Donald Trump, despite Trump's repeated attacks on his wife and the president's claims that Cruz's father was involved in the Kennedy assassination.

When O'Rourke said he wanted to expand federally funded health care to more Americans, Cruz said the congressman agreed with Vermont Sen.

Both candidates lobbed attacks throughout, taking more aggressive stances as the race enters the final stretch and Democrats try to keep their fledgling hopes of re-taking the Senate alive despite a hard host of races in many states President Donald Trump won handily in 2016. However, the 46-year-old has clarified that although he would vote for impeaching Trump, he hasn't been in favor of actually initiating impeachment proceedings.

O'Rourke "is not in the same league" as Cruz, Trump wrote, adding that Cruz has helped slash regulations and taxes and been a vigilant guardian of Second Amendment gun rights.

"Ted Cruz is for Ted Cruz", he said. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2018, in San Antonio. O'Rourke's response: "It's really interesting to hear you talk about a partisan circus, after your last six years in the US Senate". "Listen if you have this special relationship with President Trump, then where is the result of that?" He accused his opponent of being "all talk and no action".

"I'm against tariffs. I'm against the trade war", Cruz said.
