Flotilla of small boats rescues passengers from crashed plane in Micronesia

The male passenger was last seen in a small boat transporting passengers and crew to shore, an airline statement said, adding that the airline has contacted his family and it is working with local authorities to locate him.

"It's just surreal. I thought we landed hard until I looked over and saw a hole in the side of the plane and water was coming in, and I thought, well, this is not, like, the way it's supposed to happen", he said in a video posted to Facebook. The airline said the plane landed short of the runway.

"The airline is making all efforts to ensure the safety and immediate needs of our passengers and crew".

Jaynes said he had to wade through waist-deep water to get to the emergency exit.

"Local authorities and the airline are continuing to investigate the location of the unaccounted passenger". "I was really impressed with the locals who immediately started coming out in boats".

Bill Jaynes, managing editor of a Micronesia-based newspaper, was on the plane when it hit the water.

Footage has emerged of USA navy sailors embarking on a rescue mission in the aftermath of the plane crash - using an inflatable boat to shuttle people ashore before the plane sank in about 100ft (30m) of water.
