'Halloween' Slices Up a Monster $77.5 Million Opening

This has easily been the biggest opening weekend for director David Gordon Green and co-writer Danny McBride, and surprisingly, even for Jamie Lee Curtis.

Jamie Lee Curtis is keen to get behind the camera for a horror movie after starring in the latest Halloween shocker.

As Variety reports, after just one weekend the film is already the highest-grossing film in the "Halloween" franchise, easily topping the $26 million earned by the 2007 reboot.

Curtis has returned to the role that made her famous in the original Halloween in 1978, with one-time babysitter Laurie Strode now a psychologically damaged grandmother who has lived her life preparing for a showdown with masked psychopathic killer Michael Myers. BoxOfficeMojo.com noted that Halloween did beat Venom on Friday, delivering the largest October opening day of all time with $33.2 million earned.

The film, which was released in 1998 and directed by Steve Miner, is the seventh instalment in the Halloween film series and is a direct sequel to Halloween and Halloween II. While it succeeded at box office upon release, the film isn't remembered as a classic.

Halloween has had one of the best openings for an October movie ever, but star Jamie Lee Curtis wants fans to look beyond its $77.5 million Dollars in opening weekend sales. The sequel is performing modestly but has seen a significant drop from the first film's haul in 2015 which opened to $23.6 million and at the same time had brought in $43.7 million.
