HURRICANE LESLIE: Spain on full alert as tropical storm sweeps country TODAY

Hurricane Leslie could turn out to be the fiercest to hit Portugal since 1842, meteorologists warned on Saturday as the storm approached, packing winds up to 120 kilometers per hour (75 miles per hour).

Winds of 110mph were recorded as the hurricane, which weakened slightly into a post-tropical cyclone, swept into northern and central Portugal overnight, with officials warning people not to venture outdoors.

Hurricane Leslie was downgraded to a tropical storm and by Sunday morning most of the powerful winds and heave rains had subsided.

Tropical Storm Michael is bringing damaging winds and life-threatening flash flooding over portions of North Carolina and Virginia before heading off into the Atlantic Ocean, the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) said on Thursday.

The storm formed on September 23 and spent weeks in the Atlantic Ocean before coming to the Iberian peninsula.

Leslie caused a lot of tree damage in the Portuguese seaside town of Figueira da Foz.

More than 200 power lines were affected by the storm, according to reports citing power authority EDP. Some flights were also canceled or delayed. The main A1 motorway was among the roads temporarily blocked.

Hurricane Leslie is in its last day, but it is a surprising threat to Portugal and Spain.

It is rare for an Atlantic hurricane to reach the Iberian peninsula, with only five such events recorded.

Separate storm fronts in the north and east of Spain mean heavy rain is expected across much of the country on Sunday.
