Interpol's desperate plea to China

Interpol's desperate plea to China

Meng Hongwei, 64, was last seen leaving for China from the global police organisation's headquarters in Lyon, southeast France, in late September, a source close to the enquiry told AFP.

His wife apparently reported him missing after he travelled in late September.

But Interpol would not be drawn on his possible whereabouts.

The International Criminal Political Investigation (Interpol) has officially asked China for information regarding the disappearance of the agency's President Meng Hongwei on a trip to China. "This is a matter for the relevant authorities in both France and China", Interpol said in a statement.

The Interpol chief has been missing since travelling to China in late September.

The French authorities have launched an investigation into the disappearance Meng.

It was not known why Meng was being investigated.

Meng Hongwei (孟宏偉), 64, was last seen leaving for China late last month from Interpol headquarters in Lyon, France, a source close to the inquiry told reporters.

When Mr Meng was elected in 2016 as Interpol president, rights groups expressed concern that he would pursue an agenda of politicised policing that targeted Mr Xi's opponents.

Donald Trump Sends Americans First Nationwide Presidential Alert Text
As mentioned previously, FEMA constructed the test as a way to see if any improvements to the system are necessary. On Wednesday, October 3, more than 225 million Americans received a text message they were not able to block.

According to Meng's bio on Interpol's website, he has nearly 40 years of experience in criminal justice and policing, during which he's dealt with issues related to legal institutions, narcotics control, counterterrorism, border control, immigration and global cooperation. The prosecutor's office in Lyon has also opened an investigation.

Meng's wife, who has remained in Lyon with their children according to police sources, was receiving protection, it said.

The Lyon-based global police agency says Saturday it used law-enforcement channels to submit its request about the status of Meng Hongwei.

"France is puzzled about the situation of Interpol's president and concerned about the threats made to his wife", the ministry said.

The transnational organisation does not have agents of its own with powers of arrest.

China, in the midst of a week-long holiday, offered no comment on Meng's disappearance.

As president, he chairs Interpol's executive committee, elected by member states, and is in charge of ensuring that the organization complies with decisions of the committee and the annual general assembly.

Some critics of the effort - which has punished more than one million officials - say it also functions as a tool for Xi to eliminate his political rivals.

Since it began, several top officials have been detained and charged with crimes including "severe disciplinary violations", a phrase which usually refers to corruption or graft.
