Lionel Messi Barcelona made Tottenham look 'lost' in first half at Wembley

Lionel Messi Barcelona made Tottenham look 'lost' in first half at Wembley

The first half was hard for the team to start to play and feel confident in the way that we planned to play because of a few mistakes before the action that we conceded.

On the criticism the team has received in recent weeks, Alba said: "It isn't up to me to say whether the criticism has been exaggerated or not but today was a great moment for those people to stop saying (negative) things".

His performance was reminiscent of the Champions League final at this same venue in 2011 when Messi, then at the peak of his powers, destroyed Manchester United with a spellbinding performance against Sir Alex Ferguson's team.

Messi almost put the game away twice at the start of the second half, but both times his low curling shots clattered off the left post to keep Spurs trailing by just two goals.

Messi ran amok at Wembley Stadium, slicing Spurs apart with incisive passes from deep, such as the one that allowed Philippe Coutinho to open the scoring, and was as unsafe as ever in front of goal, firing in the Catalan side's final two goals to end their winless run of three games.

Barca pushed for more goal as the second resumed, as Messi rattled the upright twice in the opening five minutes.

"I think our players were heroes because to chase the game, playing against Messi, Suarez, Coutinho and company, and be competitive in the second half".

Manchester United could face UEFA action over late arrival at Old Trafford
One fan wrote: "Sack Mourinho now!" Antonio Conte is another option for United were Mourinho to get the axe. We don't have the technical quality to build from the back.

"I'll tell my kids about it tomorrow on the school run".

After slotting the ball past Hugo Lloris in the 56th minute, Messi ran over to a TV camera behind the goal while pointing.

'This guy - what he does on a football pitch is just ridiculous. Yes, Kane is still only 25 years old and has time on his side, but he will have his work cut out to get on Messi's level.

"[Messi] was unbelievable. When he's in that form he's magic to watch".

A long throw from Lloris set up a counter, with Lamela feeding Kane to turn Nelson Semedo and bend a fine finish into Ter Stegen's bottom-left corner.

The move began when Coutinho burst down the left before the former Liverpool man pulled the ball back across goal. Messi aimed for the same post he had hit twice earlier, and this time found the side netting. Tottenham's Erik Lamela made it 3-2 on 66 minutes to give the home side hope they could claim an unlikely point, but Barcelona always seemed in control and Messi was having one of those nights when he looked likely to score or create a chance whenever he had the ball.

"He's a fantastic player", Pochettino said after the game.
