Strong southeast, veering southwest, winds associated with Storm Callum, coinciding with high spring tides will affect Ireland on Thursday night and Friday morning.

Forecasters have issued a yellow warning for Northern Ireland and western Britain on Friday.

Met Eireann has upgraded warnings in effect for tomorrow to Status Orange for 13 counties ahead of Storm Callum, which is expected to hit the country tomorrow night (Thursday, October 11).

Shropshire is on the edge of a yellow weather warning issued by the Met Office - and Mid Wales is right in the firing line.

Members of the gardai, the coast guard, the defence forces, and Met Éireann, as well as a number of other bodies will attend a meeting at 3pm today to discuss preparing for the harsh weather.

This intense area of low-pressure, will pass to the west of Ireland, northern England and Scotland during Friday. There is a chance of gusts of 70 to 80 miles per hour in the Western Isles during Friday afternoon and evening.

Higher ground in the south and south west could see up to 100mm by the end of the day and the rain is expected to be accompanied by strong winds, gusting up to 60mph. This is also set to elapse at 9am on Friday morning.

James Nicholas of Arriva Trains Wales said: "There is significant rain expected this weekend across Wales coupled with high winds and very high tides, particularly up on the Cambrian Coast - linking in to Shrewsbury".

While heavy rain is expected to continue into Saturday, the wind is now forecast to ease off by Friday evening.

NRW has also advised people to take extra care will driving, to avoid walking or driving through any flood water, and to avoid fast flowing rivers and streams.
