Nawaz Sharif chairs PML-Ns CEC meeting in Lahore

SWABI: PML-N activists staged protest at Karnal Sher Khan Chowk against the arrest of party president Shahbaz Sharif by NAB.

A group of PML-N workers also gathered outside the Thokar Niaz Baig office of NAB and chanted slogans against the arrest of their leader. "This is mere political victimization", he said. Shahbaz was allegedly involved in the corruption of Rs 14 billion Ashiana Housing project and Rs 4 billion Punjab Saaf Pani Company scams.

In his statement before NAB in August, Fawad had claimed that he had awarded a contract to a "favourite firm" in the Ashiana Housing project on Shahbaz's order. The Sharif families maintains that these allegations are false and that they are being unfairly targeted.

Nawaz said the PTI government should remain prepared to face the same kind of treatment tomorrow "that they mete out to their opponents today".

It is worth mentioning here that in the election 2018 PML-N had nearly clean swept in Sialkot district by securing all 5 national assembly seats and 10 out of total 11 provincial assembly seats, but there was no notable leader present in Sialkot to launch any strong protest against the arrest of the chief of PML-N.

His lawyer said, that the development meant that Sharif would not be able to campaign for his party ahead of crucial by-elections on October 14.

Established by former military ruler Gen. Pervez Musharraf in 2000, the NAB has often been accused of targeting anti-government politicians.

A NAB court on Saturday heard charges that Sharif, in 2014, illegally cancelled a contract with a construction company and sought to award it to another company for a bribe. This, in turn, would open the way for Shehbaz Sharif's party to return to power in the coveted province of Punjab. He has fled to the United Kingdom and the NAB has written to the interior ministry to bring him back from overseas through Interpol. The former premier, his daughter Maryam Nawaz and son-in-law Captain (retd) Mohammad Safdar were released from Adiala prison on September 19 after the Islamabad High Court suspended their sentences in the Avenfield corruption reference.

The Panama Papers case is about alleged money laundering by Sharif in the 1990s when he twice served as Pakistan's prime minister to purchase assets in London.
