Nishikori beats Kukushkin in Vienna for 3rd final of season

Nishikori, the fifth seed, cruised past the world No. 7 at Vienna's Stadthalle, winning 6-3, 6-1 to set up a semifinal with Kazakhstan's Mikhail Kukushkin on Saturday. Thiem now holds the eighth spot, which is the final place in November's season-ending tournament.

"It has been a huge goal of mine all year to make it to London".

"I want to congratulate Kei on a great week", Anderson said on court after receiving the trophy.

"I've been playing some good matches, and I'm quite happy to reach the final in my debut at this tournament", he said.

Anderson has a shot at a fifth career title and second of the year after winning in NY in February.

"The score might look easy, but the match was very tough", he said.

If Nishikori goes on to win his first title since 2016 then he will improve to within 125 points of the eighth and final berth in the ATP's Race to London, with next week's Paris Masters to come.

Anderson, the 2018 Wimbledon runner-up, became the sixth player to book a place in the season-ending, eight-player ATP Finals, joining Spain's Rafael Nadal, Serbia's Novak Djokovic, Switzerland's Roger Federer, Argentina's Juan Martin del Potro and Germany's Alexander Zverev. "I couldn't be more pleased to have kept at it and finally broken through at this level".

"We were playing for 30 minutes and there had only been four games". "There was still so much tennis to play from that moment but it was obviously a very important moment in the match".

A tense second set required a tie-break to split the two finalists, with Anderson finding his best level on his serve and forehand side.

Nishikori fell to 11-14 in career finals, also losing this year at Tokyo and Monte Carlo.
