Tottenham’s Harry Kane sets sights on Messi as Barcelona come to town

Barcelona delivered an occasionally dazzling display to defeat Tottenham and maintain their 100-per-cent record in the Champions League, with Lionel Messi scoring twice in a 4-2 win at Wembley.

Lionel Messi produced his latest breathtaking performance for Barcelona at Wembley to leave Tottenham with a Champions League mountain to climb in Group B after Maurucio Pochettino's team suffered a second successive defeat in the competition.

Messi has already scored eight times this season, including a hat-trick in Barca's European demolition of PSV Eindhoven, taking his career tally for the club to well over 500 goals.

"When you concede in less than two minutes, it changes completely everything. In the second half, he had more space and that is hard to stop", added Pochettino. The Catalan side doubled their lead in the 28th minute, Rakitic firing a superb volley in off the post after good work from Messi and Coutinho down Spurs' right.

It took Barcelona only 92 seconds to score their first goal through Brazilian star Philippe Coutinho who was superbly assisted by Lionel Messi and Jordi Alba.

But for much of the game he was simply outstanding, and if he can learn to last the pace for a full 90 minutes, Barca appear to have found themselves a very special talent.

Spurs keep suffering these setbacks, but the time is coming for them to put the lessons into practice.

Tottenham got off to a terrible start as an error in judgement from the returning Hugo Lloris let Barcelona in after just two minutes.

NL Central tiebreaker game set for Monday
CHICAGO (AP) - Anthony Rizzo had four hits and scored three times , and Chicago set up a tiebreaker game for the NL Central title. Marquez will oppose rookie right-hander Walker Buehler (7-5, 2.76), who has faced the Rockies five times this season.

"I think for both teams the pitch wasn't great", said Pochettino. They will be starting this match with Dele Alli, Christian Eriksen, Jan Vertonghen, Mousa Dembele and Serge Aurier all out due to injuries.

Messi now has five goals in just two Champions League games this season.

"It's never easy to be an away team in the Champions League and even less so against a team like Tottenham".

He may not have scored at Wembley, but he did everything else and he certainly made his presence felt in Barcelona's victory.

"But for me the most important thing was that in the second half we played and we showed character".

But Barcelona needed the mercurial Messi at his best to repel a tenacious Spurs fightback as Harry Kane and Erik Lamela gave the hosts, described as "heroes" by their manager Mauricio Pochettino, a glimmer of hope.

The main area Barcelona can improve is defensively.
