Toyota recalls 2.4 million hybrid cars due to stalling problems

Cars sold in other regions such as Oceania, Africa and Asia are also affected by the systems fault.

Toyota is now in the process of recalling around 2.4 million cars worldwide over fears that a faulty component could cause some vehicles to stall without warning.

Toyota doesn't sell the Auris in the U.S., which is why the Stateside component of this recall only covers the Prius and Prius V.

The recall applies to 1.25 million vehicles in Japan, 807,000 in the USA, 290,000 in Europe and 3,000 in China with the rest across the globe.

"Owners of recalled model year 2010-2014 Prius and model year 2012-2014 Prius V vehicles should get the free fix when notified by Toyota", it said in a statement. "While power steering and braking would remain operational, a vehicle stall while driving at higher speeds could increase the risk of a crash", Toyota said.

The automaker said that it was not aware of any crashes due to the issue in Japan. A Toyota official told BBC that the issue would be fixed with the help of a software upgrade spanning over 40 minutes.

The defect occurs in "rare situations", Toyota said.

Toyota has issued several recalls in the past over issues including faults with floor mats, breaks and airbags.
