U.S. CDC confirms 62 cases of rare polio-like neurological condition

The CDC has been monitoring an increase in cases since 2014 and on Tuesday reported that it has confirmed 386 instances of AFM across the country over the last four years, majority involving children.

And for now, it's hard to say if 2018 will equal or surpass spikes seen in 2014 and 2016, Messonnier said, adding that state and federal health officials haven't finished the whole diagnostic algorithm for numerous cases reported over the past several weeks. And in very rare cases, AFM can trigger fatal neurological complications.

Lacking an established cause, health officials have confirmed cases through a review of brain scans and symptoms.

So far this year, there have been 62 cases of AFM across the nation.

Many other aspects of the illness remain unknown, including what factors puts a person at risk of becoming ill and the long-term consequences.

But this illness is exceedingly rare, affecting fewer than one in a million people.

Arizona health officials have confirmed two cases of a rare illness that has paralyzed children in more than 20 states. Of those, 30 states said they had cases that were confirmed, suspected or being investigated - including 15 states that said they had confirmed cases in 2018.

While officials aren't clear of the exact cause, they say it can occur as a result of a variety of viral illnesses including the polio virus, enteroviruses, West Nile virus and adenoviruses.

At least 65 other illnesses around the USA were being investigated as possible cases. Besides a sudden onset of paralysis or weakness in the limbs, some patients experience drooping of their face or eyelids, difficulty swallowing or moving the eyes, and slurred speech.

According to the CDC, the number of patients with AFM symptoms increases each year in August and September.

Despite its similarity to polio, none of the AFM patients has tested positive for the poliovirus, Messonnier said. We actually don't know what is causing this increase.

The virus is diagnosed by examining a patient's nervous system and in combination with looking at photos of the patient's spinal cord, the CDC says.

Parents are urged to have their children take basic precautions, such as washing hands and using insect spray to ward off mosquito bites.

There is now no cure for AFM, known cause in most cases, or clear explanation for why some people who contract the enterovirus experience symptoms and others do not. The disorder has been diagnosed in children who have received some of their recommended vaccinations and in unvaccinated children, she said.
