Asad Shafiq and Azhar Ali steadied the innings with an 82-run stand for the fourth wicket taking Pakistan within touching distance to go one up in the series.

The Blackcaps were bowled out for 249 in their second innings with BJ Watling being the top scorer with 59 runs from 145 balls with five boundaries to his name.

Azhar Ali was the last wicket to fall, out for 65, to hand New Zealand a narrow four-run win in Abu Dhabi.

With 46 runs needed and six wickets in it should still have been a stroll for Pakistan but they lost their last six wickets for 24 runs in a post-lunch period punctuated by a series of loose shots and some rogue running.

The Pakistan batsman initially called for a run after hitting the ball square on the on side, only to hesitate and eventually give up on the run with his skipper already up that end of the pitch.

New Zealand captain Kane Williams described the win as the "best in recent memory" and among the best in his career.

"The way we started off yesterday we felt we will get through to the target easily. From our prospective we ended on the right side, we showed the fighting attitude".

It was Hasan who brought Pakistan back in the first session.

Ajaz Patel became the ninth New Zealander to take five wickets in an innings on debut.

Williamson's early use of the spinners worked well for New Zealand, with Patel having overnight batsman Imam-ul-Haq (27) lbw off a delivery which turned sharply into the left-hander and caught the batsman on the backfoot.

The likes of Jeet Raval and Ish Sodhi took the centre stage as the others enjoyed their Bhangra on a Punjabi song. "We know Pakistan have got good players of spin, but we kept chipping in there", left-armer Patel said.

They had their first two matches against very strong opponents in India and Australia. "When the partnership (between Azhar and Shafiq) was going it looked the match was in our hands, but the way we collapsed it's very disappointing".

Ajaz Patel and the rest up the Black Caps will line-up for the second Test in Dubai starting on Saturday.
