Broncos ‘closing in’ on deal to trade Demaryius Thomas to Texans

Demaryius Thomas has departed the Denver Broncos, traded to the Houston Texans ahead of the NFL's trade deadline.

The Broncos will also send a 2019 seventh-rounder to Houston and will receive fourth and seventh-round picks in the 2019 draft.

The long-rumored move has finally come to fruition as the Texans met the Broncos' trade demands and picked up some much-needed help at receiver with wide receiver Will Fuller going down for the 2018 season with a knee injury. Rookie receiver Courtland Sutton has had a breakout year with the Broncos by recording 324 yards and two touchdowns in eight games.

Ironically, the Texans will travel to Denver in Week 9 as Thomas gets a chance to go up against the team that drafted him 22nd overall out of Georgia Tech in the 2010 NFL Draft. He joined Torry Holt (six), Marvin Harrison (five) and Antonio Brown (five) as the only players in National Football League history with five consecutive seasons totaling at least 90 receptions and 1,000 receiving yards (2012-16).

Not mentioned in that press release was Thomas' contractual situation, in which the Texans are on the hook for the remainder of his $4,500,000 salary this season, with a non-guaranteed 2019 salary of $14,000,000 on the books for 2019.

The five-time Pro Bowl selection ranks high on several franchise lists, including No. 2 for most receiving touchdowns and receiving yards.

Deshaun Watson became the first of Thomas' new teammates to contact him, and the 30-year-old wideout said he appreciated that a young quarterback was so excited to play with him.

But the Texans found a willing trade partner in Denver. Unless he can lead the Broncos to wins in the team's next few games, he may be out of a job soon.
