Democrats Just Won the House. Here's What They Plan to Do First

President Donald Trump touted some of his accomplishments regarding the economy and other topics in a new opinion piece published ahead of Tuesday's midterm elections. It sounds like a tall task, but even the president admits history is on the side of the Democrats.

McSally's Democratic opponent is Kyrsten Sinema, 42, a three-term member of the House of Representatives who spent several years of her childhood in poverty after her parents divorced.

The Republican Party now controls both the House and the Senate.

He says it himself: Even though Trump is not on the ballot, he is at the heart of the 2018 vote.

The public had a bad taste in its mouth from the deadlocked 1824 presidential election.

Americans votes for a new president every four years in a general election.

House Speaker Henry Clay threw his support behind John Quincy Adams in his victory over Andrew Jackson.

A poll by Research and Polling, Inc. for the Albuquerque Journal shows Democrat Michelle Lujan Grisham leads Republican Steve Pearce 53 percent to 43 percent in the race for governor.

Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner in IL lost his bid for a second term to Democrat J.B. Pritzker. "We need to elect politicians who believe in it and will do something about it".

In traditionally red Texas, popular Democrat Beto O'Rourke is trying to dethrone Senator Ted Cruz, while Republican Pete Stauber might flip a House Democratic stronghold in Minnesota. The party with a majority in the chamber also controls its committee chairmanships and has the power to issue subpoenas - so a Democrat-controlled House could enforce aggressive oversight of investigations of the president's administration, including alleged Russian Federation collusion, Trump's business dealings and sexual assault allegations against him.

Democrats were most optimistic about the House, a sprawling battlefield set largely in America's suburbs where more educated and affluent voters in both parties have soured on Trump's turbulent presidency, despite the strength of the national economy.

The American Party and the Whigs had almost collapsed, but still managed to elect some members in 1858.

Democratic Senate candidates are in danger of losing their seats in Missouri, North Dakota and Indiana. One famous Republican lost that year.

Today's election is being called the most important in generations.

And 35 Senate seats are in play, as are nearly 40 governorships and the balance of power in virtually every state legislature. This race may come down to the popularity of the president.

Lincoln and Douglas would face one another in a 1860 rematch for the presidency, with a different result.

A simple House majority would be enough to impeach Trump if evidence surfaces that he obstructed justice or that his 2016 campaign colluded with Russian Federation.

While Rauner lost his bid for another term, voters opted to return other incumbent governors, including Democrats Andrew Cuomo in NY and Tom Wolf in Pennsylvania, and Republican Charlie Baker in MA.

The GOP controlled two-thirds of Congress after Ulysses S. Grant's landslide re-election as president in 1872.

As things stand 24 hours before the first vote is cast, the Democrats are scarcely confident of triumph, however. The Liberal Republican Party was a splinter party of Republicans who were unsatisfied with Grant policies. "But I have never seen such an enthusiastic Republican Party".

"If House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., take control of Congress, they will drag America back into the economic abyss we struggled so hard to climb out of", Trump wrote. Independents won some House races, but Democrats won most. Supporters of Trump want his party to retain control of the Senate, and he has endorsed and campaigned for Scott.

Hillary Clinton, the Democratic presidential candidate in 2016, said it was time for Americans to say "enough" after two years of watching the Trump administration "attack and undermine our democratic institutions and values".Clinton urged the electorate to "vote against radicalism, bigotry, and corruption" and support "fantastic candidates all over the country - including a historic number of women".

Democrat Bill Nelson, 76, was first elected to the Senate in 2000 and was easily reelected in 2006 and 2012. But that second term included an economic downturn in 1893 and a major coal strike.
