North Korea's Kim Open to Nuclear Site Inspection

DPRK leader Kim Jong-UN expressed willingness on the admission of global inspectors to the main nuclear testing facility in the country.

"I understand that Chairman Kim told (South Korean) President Moon (Jae In) during their summit in September that if the USA took corresponding steps he would not only be willing to shut down the Yongbyon nuclear facilities but also allow verification", the source was quoted as saying.

The peaceful moment is something just months ago the world never imagined would happen as tensions on the Korean Peninsula skyrocketed following a series of missile tests by the North and war of words with South Korean ally, the US. He met with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in Singapore in June which produced a vaguely-worded, joint statement agreeing to "the denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula" in return for unspecified security guarantees from the US.

And that will require further coordination between Seoul and well as stronger signs of denuclearization from North Korea.

Annual joint military exercises between South Korea and its ally the United States have been scaled down for spring 2019 to avoid undoing diplomatic advances to bring peace to the Korean peninsula.

Washington has also been calling for high-level talks through a different contact channel, but North Korea has not been responsive. This step was in response to the US demands that North had to take steps to fully close its nuclear and missile facilities before it agrees for easing of global sanctions.

Pompeo's North Korean counterpart has been Kim Yong-chol ever since he made his first visit to Pyongyang at the beginning of April as the Central Intelligence Agency director. "It suggests the looking for low-priced ways to get progress on dismantling North Korean nuclear weapons". South Korea had about 60 posts inside the DMZ guarded by layers of barbed wire and manned by troops with machine guns.

Rail, road and pipeline links through North Korea to China, Russia and on to Europe were central to the Sunshine Policy of President Kim Dae-jung. North Korea is desperate for an easing of United Nations and U.S. sanctions which have blocked much of its trade and crippled its economy.

"Whether it's a face-to-face sit-down meeting, that's one thing", she said, "but we continue to have conversations and we think we're in a good place with that". The second Trump-Kim summit is not expected to be held at least until January.

"I think it will be absolutely imperative in this next summit that we come away with a plan for identifying all of the weapons in question, identifying all the development sites, allowing for inspections of the sites and the plan for dismantling nuclear weapons", he said.
