Sarah Huckabee Sanders Updates World On Donald Trump’s Midterms Night

Though liberal voters across the country are fired up after the first two years of Republican control, it's far from guaranteed that they will turn up in great enough numbers to deliver the House and Senate back to Democrats.

A spokesperson for Ms Pelosi said Mr Trump had called her to congratulate her party on winning a House majority, and acknowledged Ms Pelosi's call for bipartisanship.

The Democrats are projected to take back control of the House of Representatives, meaning the president now faces a much tougher time putting his agenda into action.

A simple House majority would be enough to impeach Trump if evidence surfaces that he obstructed justice or that his 2016 campaign colluded with Russian Federation.

Almost 40 percent of voters cast their ballots to express opposition to the president, according to AP VoteCast, the national survey of the electorate, while one-in-four said they voted to express support for Trump.

"Thanks to you, tomorrow will be a new day in America", Pelosi said at a victory event in Washington, adding that the election was about restoring "checks and balances" to government.

"We'll strive for bipartisanship, seeking common ground as we are responsible to do".

But the Democrats' push into President Trump country remained uncertain.

The White House has been stressing the historical headwinds it faced: In the last three decades, 2002 was the only midterm election when the party in office gained Senate seats.

All 435 seats in the House of Representatives, 35 seats in the 100-member Senate and 36 governorships were up for grabs.

Some of the campaign's biggest Democratic stars lost. Ted Cruz held off Democrat Beto O'Rourke. If Deb Haaland won her congressional race in New Mexico, she would become the first Native American woman elected to Congress.

In gubernatorial races, Republican Kris Kobach, a Trump ally, was beaten by a Democrat in Kansas.

Ilhan Omar of Minnesota and Rashida Tlaib of MI, who are both Democrats, will be the first Muslim women to serve in Congress. Firstly, in a broad sense, many see the midterms as a referendum on the performance of the sitting president, so poor performance for the Republicans could be an ominous sign of what's to come in 2020.

How the market shakes out in the final two years of Trump's presidency will probably be influenced by Tuesday's elections. Hispanic voters favored Democratic House candidates by 33 percentage points - higher than the 18-percentage point gap that Democrats enjoyed in 2014, the poll found.

Trump is under 50% approval in Texas, where Sen. "We know more women will be going to Congress. and there will be sisters waiting for them who will lift them up".

Democrats seized control of the lower house of Congress in midterm elections on Tuesday, dealing a stern rebuke to Donald Trump nearly two years into his polarising, roller coaster presidency. It's possible that House Democrats will solidify their lead, with strong candidates running in at least two districts. Also, more said they showed up at the polls to express opposition than did those who said they were casting a ballot to support him.

With divided leadership in Congress and a president who has taken an expansive view of executive power, Washington could be in store for even deeper political polarization and legislative gridlock.

"This is basically, we are judging the Republican Party for the last two years". That would make it 54 seats-and Jon Tester in Montana and Claire McCaskill also await their fate with voters.

They've also already reportedly threatened to subpoena Mr Trump's tax returns. Nevada could be more important, because Dean Heller is the most vulnerable Senate GOP incumbent in the nation, and Democrats probably need to win his seat to seize the majority.

Trump has framed the elections as a choice between law and order maintained by Republicans and an out-of-control Democratic mob, while focusing heavily on hardline immigration campaign promises, including a legally dubious pledge to end birthright citizenship for the children of undocumented immigrants born in the US.
