Trump fires US Attorney General Jeff Sessions

Trump fires US Attorney General Jeff Sessions

Susan Collins, Republican senator for ME, also warned Mr Trump against interfering with Mr Mueller's Russian Federation investigation, saying he "must be allowed" to finish it.

Mr Whitaker has publicly criticised Mr Mueller's conduct several times since the inquiry began in May previous year and taken the side of Mr Trump, who has dismissed it...

Whitaker was Sessions' chief of staff and outwardly criticized Mueller's investigation. The former attorney general submitted a letter of resignation at the president's "request". Sessions had held on to his job as the nation's top law enforcement officer despite frequent bursts of embarrassingly public criticism from Trump.

"And to outsiders, it looks like he [Trump] chose this person because this person has committed to end this investigation, this person is loyal to Donald Trump".

"We'll see what happens over the next few days, but it is a concern because (Preisdent Donald Trump) obviously was unhappy with Jeff Sessions because of his recusal, but Jeff Sessions did what the law required him to do", King said in an interview at the school.

Mr Sessions removed himself from the probe after Democrats accused him of failing to disclose contacts he had had with the Russian ambassador as a senior adviser to Mr Trump's campaign.

Whitaker has no intention of recusing himself from overseeing the Mueller probe, the Washington Post reported.

Trump had enjoyed Whitaker's cable TV appearances - including one on CNN in which he suggested that the Mueller probe be starved of resources - and the two men soon struck a bond.

"The (Democrats') first step would be to protect the investigation, they would do that by making sure all documents were secured by ensuring Mueller's investigative team was not broken up", he said, adding: "On Capitol Hill, the Democrats are quite likely to call for a floor vote immediately to countermand and reverse the firing".

And 35 Senate seats are in play, as are nearly 40 governorships and the balance of power in virtually every state legislature. Supporters of Trump want his party to retain control of the Senate, and he has endorsed and campaigned for Scott.

Whitaker has, however, argued for limitations on the investigation.

Critics worry Whitaker may be unlikely or unwilling to defend the investigation, given his history of partisanship and loyalty to Trump.

After recusing himself from the Russian Federation probe, the staunchly conservative Sessions spent his time ramping up efforts to combat violent gangs, drug use and illegal immigration - all key components of Trump's law-and-order agenda.

Answering allegations that the White House had used a clip edited by a notorious right-wing conspiracy theorist, Trump spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said: "We stand by our statement".

Trump has told confidants he remains deeply annoyed by the 18-month-old Mueller probe, believing it is not just a "witch hunt" but an expensive and lengthy negative distraction. However, it would be an immediate priority for Democratic investigations when they officially take control of the House in January.

The president can not directly fire the special counsel. The investigation is looking into U.S. allegations of Russian meddling in the election two years ago and any possible coordination between Russian and the Trump campaign, which the president denies.

Sessions endured the name-calling in silence, even as he aggressively carried out the administration's conservative policies, such as stripping federal funding from so-called sanctuary cities and states and rescinding protection for young adults brought into the country illegally as children.

As attorney general, and earlier as White House counsel, he faced criticism for drafting controversial rules for military war tribunals, seeking to limit the legal rights of detainees at the USA prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
