Trump's ex-lawyer Michael Cohen pleads guilty to lying about Russian Federation deal

Donald Trump and his aides continued negotiations about a potential Trump Tower project in Moscow well into the 2016 presidential campaign, his ex-lawyer Michael Cohen acknowledged in a guilty plea in a NY federal court on Thursday.

On Thursday, the president branded Cohen a "weak person" and emphasized that the property deal was ultimately dropped. Both men are caught up in Mueller's Russian Federation investigation over claims that they may have conspired with WikiLeaks while the organization was releasing emails and documents that painted a poor picture of Democrat Hillary Clinton during the 2016 presidential election.

"These developments make clear that my colleagues and I must step in and provide accountability", said Nadler (D-NY). Cohen had been referring to Trump as Individual One throughout.

- Cohen, who was Trump's personal lawyer and a senior executive in the president's real estate business, the Trump Organization, admitted to having lied to Congress about trying to negotiate a deal for a Trump Tower in Moscow well into the middle of 2016, even when Trump had wrapped up the Republican nomination for president.

Senior Democrats on the Senate intelligence and judiciary committees believe Donald Trump junior may have given false evidence when testifying about a now famous Trump Tower meeting with Russians in June 2016.

A pardon for Paul Manafort is "not off the table", US President Donald Trump said Wednesday, drawing swift rebuke from critics who fear the president will use his executive power to protect friends and supporters caught up in the Russian Federation probe. And lying to investigators, Mueller's office asserted, was an egregious violation of that agreement.

There will also now be increased scrutiny into whether the president misled the public with statements like "I have no dealings with Russian Federation".

When asked why he would hire Cohen if he's an untrustworthy and weak person, Trump said "a long time ago, he did me a favor".

"Cohen discussed the status and progress of the Moscow Project with [Trump] on more than the three occasions Cohen claimed to the Committee, and he briefed family members of [Trump] within the Company about the project", according to the charging document.

Cohen also told lawmakers he had had limited contact with Mr Trump about the project, when in fact it had been "more extensive".

But after pleading guilty, he said his conscience required him to tell the truth about Trump. Prosecutor say Cohen is cooperating with Mueller and has met with his team at least seven times.

President Donald Trump reacted to the news that Michael Cohen pleaded guilty to making false statements to Congress about the Russian Federation investigation, calling his former lawyer "very weak".

"But zero, I mean I will tell you right now, zero, I have nothing to do with Russian Federation", he said.

It was a potentially lucrative deal for Trump's company, handing it $4 million in upfront fees plus possibly millions more from a cut on everything from food and banquet fees to spa charges.

Mueller team has asked Trump about the Russian real estate deal, but it was not it was not immediately clear whether it was one of the questions Trump answered last week.

In August, Mr Cohen pleaded guilty to campaign finance violations, tax evasion and bank fraud in a case brought by federal prosecutors in NY. He previously pleaded guilty to arranging illegal payments in the closing days of the 2016 campaign to a porn actress and a Playboy model to keep them from discussing the affairs they said they had with Trump. Cohen is scheduled to be sentenced December 12.
