An Urban Meyer rival is so happy for him

An Urban Meyer rival is so happy for him

Urban Meyer will be retiring after coaching the Ohio State Buckeyes in the Rose Bowl on New Year's Day.

The Ohio State Buckeyes Twitter account stated Tuesday morning a press conference will be held at 2 p.m.

The announcement of Urban Meyer's retirement on Tuesday was shocking only in the moment Ohio State chose to drop the news, not in the substance of the news itself, which has been at least a possibility for months. Meyer then retired again citing health issues and made a decision to move into a broadcasting career with ESPN. He later moved on to coach at Florida, and won his first national championship with the Gators in 2006.

Meyer, who had a "core values" banner in the locker room demanding his players treat women with respect, apologized to Ohio State fans following word that he would be suspended. To assume Meyer's retirement counts the Buckeyes out in the near term is simplistic and premature; this is a team that's been a juggernaut under any number of coaches.

Meyer said leaving would have been more hard if the program wasn't healthy.

"I would honestly throw him in the quarterback guru category", one person who has worked with Day at Ohio State said. It has won 54 of its last 58 Big Ten games. Or could one of the most successful college coaches of all time be thinking about jumping to, say, the Browns, joining forces with the guy who skewered the O with an Sooners flag? "I'll visit with recruits on campus, and then I'll have conversations with them if they feel necessary because I'm still really close with that (2019) class". Because Day coached with former Meyer assistant Steve Addazio at Boston College, he already had familiarity with Meyer's offensive scheme and terminology, which helped him hit the ground running in Columbus last season. Prior to becoming a head coach, Meyer served as an assistant at Notre Dame (1996-2000), Colorado State (1990-95), Illinois State (1988-89) and Ohio State (1986-87), where he learned under mentor Earl Bruce. He was caught lying and deleting text messages by a university committee investigating why Meyer harbored a domestic abuser such as Smith on his staff for years.

Meyer took a leave of absence from Florida in 2010 after suffering from chest pains.

"I plan on coaching", he said on October 29.

After beginning his head coaching career at Bowling Green, Meyer moved on to Utah and had a flawless 12-0 season in 2004 before stepping into the spotlight when he accepted the top job at Florida in 2005.
