Eastern Europe has fastest-growing HIV infection rate worldwide

In Russia, official data show there were more than 104,000 new HIV diagnoses in 2017, taking total cases to more than 1.2 million.

The number of people newly diagnosed with the infection fell by 17%, from 5,280 in 2016 to 4,363 in 2017.

"The WHO European region is the only region where HIV infections are sharply rising", said Dr Masoud Dara, of WHO Europe.

Although most HIV epidemics in the region are becoming more general in nature, key populations remain the most affected.

"We all need to realize our responsibilities and the critical role we all have to play to make Pakistan HIV free", the minister said while addressing a Seminar in connection with World AIDS Day.

"The significance in this report is that we can see a sharp difference between Eastern Europe and the European Union where the number of HIV infection numbers is dropping". Many countries fail to recognize that raising awareness among young people and offering them better access to early HIV testing are critical. Every second, the disease was in an advanced stage, when she was diagnosed.

"Once diagnosed, individuals are less likely to pass on their infection due to treatment and changing their behaviour, so it is essential for both the person with HIV and anyone with whom they may have sex, that the condition is diagnosed early".

Men are suffering disproportionately from HIV across the entire Region: 70% of new HIV diagnoses are in men.

An estimated total of 102,000 people were living with HIV in the United Kingdom in 2017, with 8% (8,200) unaware of their infection, according to Public Health England (PHE). "To support people living with HIV and protect those at higher risk of infection, we need to fast track action by tailoring interventions".

The Chamber of the capital will launch on Wednesday the campaign "stop HIV is in our hands", with the aim of "increasing the knowledge of the population" regarding the prevention and transmission of the AIDS virus.

The overall decline in the EU/EEA resulted primarily from a 20% drop in new diagnoses among men who have sex with men between 2015 and 2017, which remains the predominant mode of HIV transmission (38% in 2017) in this part of Europe.

Consequently, the report emphasizes that new infections would have to decline by 78 percent by 2020 in order to meet specific World Health Organization and Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS objectives. Participants expressed governments' firm commitment to scale up efforts to implement the Action Plan for the Health Sector Response to HIV in the WHO European Region and achieve the 90-90-90 targets.
