Erdogan takes Saudi prince to task, demands extraditions

Trudeau said he told the 33-year-old crown prince that Canada would always look to "improve opportunities and protections and rights for people around the world, including in Saudi Arabia".

The two moments captured the dilemma facing world leaders at the Group of 20 summit in Buenos Aires this weekend: How to deal with the crown prince, who is dogged by controversy over the murder of a Saudi journalist but is also de facto leader of a rich, oil-producing kingdom that is a major global investor.

In related news, President Vladimir Putin said on Saturday that Russian Federation and Saudi Arabia had agreed to renew a pact on oil production cuts, amid slumping crude prices on global markets.

Pompeo reiterated his insistence that there was no "direct evidence" that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (better known as MBS) ordered the killing of Khashoggi, who lived in the United States and wrote for The Washington Post.

"There's no direct evidence linking him to the murder of Jamal Khashoggi", Pompeo told CNN.

"We have no intention to damage the Saudi royal family or the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, but revealing the truth about the murder with all its aspects and putting all whose responsible on a trial would benefit the Saudi Arabia as well", he said.

The killing of Khashoggi, a Washington Post columnist and a critic of the crown prince, at Riyadh's consulate in Istanbul, has strained Saudi Arabia's ties with the West and battered Prince Mohammed's image overseas.

When they neared the second fence, USA border agents fired tear gas and rubber bullets at them as helicopters buzzed overhead. And the journey, which began for a lot of them in Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador, is also taking a physical toll.

The Trump administration's reluctance to acknowledge reports from the justice community stands in contrast to calls for a USA response from lawmakers including Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who demanded action for Khashoggi's death, which he called "completely abhorrent to everything the United States holds dear and stands for".

British officials said trade was not on the agenda for the talks with the Saudi heir apparent, known as MBS.

However, Moscow has also fostered strong ties with Saudi Arabia's regional arch foe Iran.

The Turkish president said Turkey had evidence that Khashoggi had been killed over the course of seven and a half minutes and had shared the evidence with those countries who had asked for it.

The Journal reported that Central Intelligence Agency analysis of the communication "seems to foreshadow the Saudi operation launched against Khashoggi".

The Saudi journalist was killed in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul in October. Trump issued a statement that included defence of the kingdom as a "great ally" and refusal to assign blame to the prince, saying "maybe he did and maybe he didn't" order the killing.

Last week, in a rebuke of Saudi Arabia and the administration's handling of the Khashoggi case, a majority of the Senate voted to advance a measure to end U.S. military support to Saudi Arabia for its war in Yemen against Iranian-backed militants.
