Merkel's plane diverted after technical issue

An Airbus A340-300 carrying German Chancellor Angela Merkel had to make an emergency landing in Cologne, Germany, on November 29 after an electronics failure while flying over the Netherlands.

Shortly after departing from Berlin on Thursday evening, the plane circled over the Netherlands and landed at the Cologne/Bonn airport in western Germany - which is also home base for the German government's aircraft. Last year, Merkel was delayed on a trip to Egypt because a windshield heater malfunctioned.

In Argentina on Friday, Merkel had been scheduled to meet with President Donald Trump, Chinese leader Xi Jinping, as well as their Argentine host, President Mauricio Macri.

She was due to arrive in Buenos Aires at around 2100 GMT - without her husband Joachim Sauer, who after the plane troubles opted to skip the event.

"Luckily, we had an excellent crew and the most experienced pilot of the special air mission wing", Merkel said.

The plane was met on the tarmac by emergency vehicles.

According to German military blog Augengeradeaus.net, the aircraft was transmitting a 7600 transponder code, indicating a radio failure.

Merkel has had to reschedule some meetings due to the delay. It was not immediately clear which bilateral meetings would have to be rescheduled. German news agency dpa first reported the unscheduled landing. Back then, the issue involved damage caused by rodents, German media outlets reported.
