Mexico leader says he talked with Trump about migrants, jobs

President Donald Trump, center, Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Mexico's President Enrique Pena Nieto, left, participate in the USMCA signing ceremony, November 30, 2018, in Buenos Aires. I will be the one to shut it down. Trump has fired up his supporters with the anti-immigrant talking point at a number of campaign rallies and in the press since then.

But Mexican leaders have been adamant Mexico would not foot the bill, and discussion of the border wall, and how it gets paid for, has not been a part of their trade negotiations. Lopez Obrador said Thursday morning that the topic of funding for a border wall was not discussed "in any conversation".

Pelosi also reiterated her view that Republicans "do not have the votes to pass the president's proposal" for $5 billion in border wall funding.

Last month, Trump and the leaders of Canada and Mexico signed documents that would rework the 1994 North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). Congress still needs to approve the trade deal, which has provisions including requirements that 75 percent of auto content be made in North America and 40-45 percent of auto workers earn at least $16 per hour.

Schumer began his remarks by insulting Trump, saying The Washington Post gave him "a whole lot of Pinocchios" on the wall and stressing that Democrats have "a disagreement. not on border security but on the wall". Pelosi reportedly balked at the idea. He chided Trump for calling for a shutdown 20 times, ignoring that Trump had specifically said in this meeting that he does not want that.

The trade deal, essentially a NAFTA 2.0, wouldn't change very much in the way the USA conducts business with Mexico. He would only say he doesn't know about walls and would not say whether discussion of wall payment was even raised in the negotiations. The old wall, they said, was not as effective and migrants were able to get across to the U.S.

Schumer, meanwhile, suggested on the Senate floor Thursday that if Mexico is truly funding the wall, Congress does not need to spend any money on it.

In January 2018, the president told the Wall Street Journal that Mexico would pay for the wall.

"I myself thought we would open the meeting with a prayer, which I did once we privately had the meeting outside the press - if you call that private because there were many people in the room", she said, according to the network. "You can't have it both ways".
